OVERVIEW
Referees are necessary for touch matches. Refereeing is provided by a range of individuals from the keen parent/supporter for junior and more casual games to semi-professional referees for major tournaments.
The key ingredients for a referee are:
- A sound knowledge of the rules
- A positive attitude to good sportsmanship
- A reasonable level of fitness
- Sense of humour

What Do You Need To Do To Become A Representative Referee?
There are several representative tournaments throughout the Touch calendar which require qualified referees from all provinces throughout New Zealand. Different levels of qualifications are required depending on the particular tournament.
MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA FOR REFEREES FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS
The following policy was approved by the Touch NZ Referee Advisory Panel at its Panel meeting held 30 May 2009.
Minimum Selection Criteria for Referees for the Touch NZ National Secondary Schools Championships
- Attendance at SS Zonal Playoffs in March of the same year;
- Referee commitment at module and provincial level;
- Fitness test results submitted to Touch NZ for the individual Referee by the deadline/s indicated by Touch NZ.
Minimum Selection Criteria for Referees for the Touch NZ National Secondary Schools Championships, Touch NZ National Open/Masters Championships and 15-17 National Championships:
- Attendance at SS Zonal Playoffs in March of that season (a preference will be given to those Referees that attended the SS Zonal Playoffs in March, however from the 2010-2011 season attendance at SS Zonal Playoffs is a mandatory criteria for any Referee participating at Touch NZ National events);
- Full attendance at TNZ National Secondary Schools Championships if selected. In the event of having more Referees apply than needed then the criteria below also applies to those not selected
- If the Referee is in the Central or Southern Region, attendance at Junior IPS in December each year;
- If the Referee is in the Northern Region, attendance at a minimum of 2 days of the Junior IPS events;
- Referee commitment at module and provincial level;
- Fitness test results submitted to Touch NZ for the individual Referee by the deadline/s indicated by Touch NZ.
What Representative Tournaments Are There?
- Maori Nationals - early December
- Junior Tri-Series - late January
- Northern Inter-Provincial Series (IPS) U15-17s - late January/early February
- Northern Inter-Provincial Series (IPS) U9-U13s - late January/early February
- Masters Nationals - late February
- Open/Youth Nationals - early March
- Secondary Schools Zone 1 Regionals - late March
- U15 & U17 Nationals - mid April
